Jules Scholten is the grandson of Julius August Lörzing. His father was an accountant at the Internationale Handelmaatschappij (‘Internatio’) in Medan. His grandfather, Julius August Lörzing, served as a non-commissioned officer in the KNIL in Java from 1894 to 1901, then as a forestry officer until 1914. He later worked as a botanist and horticulturist at ’s Lands Plantentuin in Buitenzorg, continuing his service in the Boschwezen forestry department until 1930. From 1930 to January 1942, he managed the city gardens of Medan.

During his internment in Japanese prison camps in Java between 1942 and 1945 (Kramat, Tjideng, Grogol, Baros, and Bangkong), Julius August Lörzing wrote his memoirs, "Erinnerungen", in German. His grandson, Jules Scholten, later translated the memoirs into Dutch.
